Online Phishing & Phone Vishing Scams
Overview of Scams
Phishing
Phishing is a form of social engineering where attackers attempt to trick people into revealing personal or confidential information to commit fraud.
Phishing can occur through verbal conversations or online via two common methods:
- Email forgeries
- Spoofed websites
The best defense against phishing is vigilance—stay alert for anything that looks suspicious.
How to Spot a Phishing Scam
- Hover to Discover
Hover your cursor over links before clicking to verify the destination. If it looks suspicious or unfamiliar, do not click. - Check the Details
Be cautious of emails with poor grammar, spelling mistakes, or unusual formatting. These are common signs of phishing. - Avoid the Unexpected
Be skeptical of emails claiming you've won a contest you didn’t enter. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. - Trust but Verify
Email addresses and sender names can be spoofed. If unsure, don’t click links or open attachments. Contact the company directly using verified contact info. Our contact information can be found here and in the footer. - Don’t Share Personal Information
Legitimate businesses and government agencies will never ask for your password or sensitive information via unsolicited email or phone call. - Don’t Be Fooled by Appearances
Scam emails often include realistic logos, professional language, and “official-looking” addresses. Always verify the source independently. - Watch for Urgency
Messages demanding immediate action are a red flag. Slow down and think before responding.
