Last week I was discussing my experience in the Family Entertainment Industry with some new employees and it really made me think about how the industry has evolved over the last 20 years. Technology has really made a difference in how Family Entertainment Centers are operated today, so for fun I am going to share some of my observations.

I have seen so many of our clients having too many buttons on the screen. Too many buttons makes things challenging for the cashier which can result in a slow transaction. You want the transaction time to be as quick as possible to keep your lines moving. So taking a little time to simplify things can have huge benefits. The first option mentioned was the implementation of table and modifier screens. In case you missed it, here is a link to that article: 1 Simple Trick to Optimize your FEC POS Screens. What I am going to discuss is the option of simplifying your daily specials. CenterEdge Advantage Software has a method to allow your POS buttons to change depending on the time of day and the day of the week. A lot of our clients will have their daily specials listed on a SPECIALS tab that can be accessed at anytime. This trick not only allows you to simplify your screen but also provides a level of security. If you are not using this method then your cashiers have the option to sell your specials at anytime, any day of the week. So the Tuesday special can be sold on Saturday evening to one of their friends. If you are not paying attention to your reports, you might never notice.

One thing that always drove me crazy was the thought of inventory just disappearing. When I was operating a FEC it was always a huge concern to control the inventory that your employees are handling. This causes a huge internal struggle. One struggle is that I was smart enough to understand the risk of your inventory items being out in the open. So you have to stay on your toes at all times. The other struggle is not trusting your employees. Your employees are your team mates and play such an important role in driving your business in your FEC. The easiest way to control these struggles is putting together employee policies to help control your inventory. The three areas that I want to focus on is your Redemption area, Arcade area and Food & Beverage.
Don’t you just love this time of year? The doldrums of winter are fading. The days are getting warmer…. the birds are chirping… the mosquitoes are biting. You are just beginning to relax and enjoy the sunshine when it hits you - “SPRING BREAK” is near!! The happy warm feeling evaporates as you start to think about all of the things that need to be done. You need to adjust our hours of operations, change your pricing structure. Where are those time off requests… did ALL of your employees really request the same week off? Have you developed your specials for the holiday week?
